Male Grooming

According to The Men’s Nature Study in 2015, 70% of South African men feel that it is very important to look good and 44% exercise 3 to 5 times a week. This makes most South African men fall under the Metro Man umbrella. A Metro Man can be defined as a man who is especially meticulous about his appearance and grooming. He typically spends a significant amount of money and time shopping as part of this.

Manscaping

One of the ways that men take care of themselves is by manscaping. Manscaping can be defined as the removal or trimming of hair on a man’s body for cosmetic purposes.
Manscaping by yourself can be quite difficult and a little dangerous at the same time. So it is best to visit a beauty salon to assist with the treatment. You can decide between a temporary option - waxing, trimming and shaving or a more permanent alternative such as laser hair removal.

Laser Hair Removal

One thing that men have to realize, is that laser hair removal is not just for women. Men can have laser hair removal treatments done too. You might struggle to find a beauty salon willing to treat gents, especially in the more intimate parts, but Glo Laser & Beauty offers laser hair removal treatments to gents from head to toe.
Men are increasingly interested in having body hair removed for athletic as well as aesthetic reasons. This is where manscaping comes in. Most men are unused to navigating the world of beauty and therefore manscaping is a whole new world for them. Laser hair removal results can reduce social anxiety, build confidence and offer great results both personally and professionally.

Optimal results: Men VS Women

Women and men have different concerns when it comes to facial and body hair. Where women would have the desire to remove hair completely, men rather want to focus on thinning excess hair and not removing it completely.

Popular treatment areas for gents

Men usually want to reduce hair on their chest and back, stomach, abs, shoulders and bikini area. On their faces, they mostly want eyebrow shaping in order to reduce unibrows. Gents may also wish to clean up behind their ears, the back of their neck, atop the scalp or around the nose. Men who are darker-skinned may also need to focus on treating razor bumps and ingrown hairs.

How does Laser Hair Removal work?

The energy

Laser energy is heat energy which is attracted to the melanin found in the hair follicle. The laser penetrates the skin and the melanin absorbs the energy which then travels down the shaft into the hair follicle. The follicle is not able to cool down and therefore it seals off the blood supply to the follicle. And without blood, the follicle is not able to produce hair. Those follicles that aren’t completely disabled are at least damaged which means the hair that is produced grows back very slowly and is finer in texture.

Risk

Your skin will not get damaged as the colour of your skin will be the determining factor in the settings that the laser will be adjusted for your treatment. Not all laser can treat all skin types, but at Glo Laser and Beauty we offer laser hair removal treatments with the award-winning Soprano Ice laser which is safe and effective on all skin types.

Recovery Time

The recovery time is almost zero, but you might experience some redness in the area post-treatment. This will disappear 30 minutes after the treatment. Some clients might also experience edema. Edema is when the follicle swells, but this is a positive reaction as it indicates that the follicle has really absorbed the laser energy and is still reacting. Edema looks like mosquito bites and will worst case scenario last a day or so. The hair that was in the follicle during the treatment has come loose and will have to wiggle its way to the surface of your skin and fall out. Once the hair has fallen out, expect skin as smooth as a baby’s bottom!

Adverse side effects

The treatment should be done correctly and the settings must be right. If not, you could experience hyperpigmentation which is known as the temporary darkening of the skin. This is not permanent and does resolve over the course of weeks. In some cases, you might experience a blister, but if your therapist is experienced, this will not happen. If something like this occurs, you should visit a facility that has a doctor or medical professionals on site that can treat you.

Manscaping options: What to expect

Laser hair removal treatments that are available today are fast, effective and long-lasting. The procedure includes shaving the area to be treated the day before or the morning of the treatment. One thing you should take note of is that laser hair removal is not a one treatment solution - you will have to go for 8-12 treatments, once every 4-8 weeks. The good news is that you will see a reduction of hair after each session. Depending on the area to be treated, you can achieve 70-90% hair reduction after completing a laser hair removal course.

Touch Up

You might need a few touch up sessions after your hair removal journey to keep the area maintained, but some prefer to just shave the hair that remains. Glo Laser & Beauty offers 50% off on all maintenance laser sessions. Maintenance sessions are all treatments after you’ve already had 12 sessions on a specific area with Glo Laser and Beauty.

Now what?

Are you considering having laser hair removal done? The most important aspect is to do your research and make sure you’re getting a clinic with experience. You should have the treatment done by a certified laser therapist.
