Those germs lurk everywhere, and unfortunately many people are forced to venture into the day while they’re still infectious simply because keeping your germs to yourself would involve time off work!
As an aside; if you are able to, take yourself to bed as soon as the symptoms start manifesting, pop your vitamins and don’t move until you’re really better!
Bear in mind as well that the worst thing you can do is to do exercise while you have flu, it simply accelerates the bug through your system.
And now, on to the largest organ of our body, the skin, and how to protect and care for it in winter.
The smooth youthful look you’ve managed to cultivate through summer is going to take a little more work to maintain in winter. Although the natural lipid barrier that keeps moisture locked in to our skin is still in action, the cold air arriving in winter sucks out more moisture than the barrier can keep it in.
What was beautifully smooth skin in summer becomes dry and flaky in winter if not cared for the right way, so here are a few tips that will help maintain a healthy glow throughout winter:
Drink your water
We know, it’s been flogged to death, but drinking water, preferably with lemon, when you wake up, and then making sure you drink more throughout the day, is going to go a long way to keeping your skin hydrated.
No water, no hydration; this should be your winter mantra! By the way, coffee doesn’t count as hydration, in fact it contributes to drying out the skin.
Exfoliate dead skin
The watchword where it comes to exfoliation in order to get rid of dead skin is ‘gentle’. You also need to be careful not to over-exfoliate as this won’t give the new, healthy skin a chance to establish the glow you’re after.
Speak to your beauty therapist at Glo Laser & Beauty Clinic in Pretoria about the right exfoliator to use for your specific skin type. What works for dry skin isn’t going to work for acne prone skin, which is why you need to make sure you’re using the right exfoliator.
Moisturise, moisturise, moisturise
Everything that needs to be done to keep skin glowing and healthy in winter revolves around maintaining moisture, from the inside out, and moisturisers play an essential role in keeping your skin well fed and hydrated in winter.
Once again, you need to make absolutely sure about your skin type before investing in a moisturiser that’ll keep your skin supple and soft.
These basics are the reason that Glo Laser & Beauty Salon encourages clients to take advantage of their free skin consultation, which then sets the groundwork for the use of skincare products that will give you maximum benefit.
Winter lips
While we take great pains at looking after our skin in winter, we tend to relegate our lips to the back-burner, only taking action when they start becoming painful.
Because of the cold air in winter, moisture is sucked out of our lips, often leaving us with painfully dry and cracked lips that then need serious repair.
Using a gentle scrub on the lips once a day or a few times a week is going to keep them soft and smooth. Add a really good lip balm into the mix and you’ll have lips that look and feel great all year round!
